New forum for the new year huh?
I take time off from lurking at the old boards for New Years (CNY) and it disappears into thin air. Took me a bit to find this place, but here I am, back to lurking again.
Nowhere near as lively as it used to be, but maybe time will change that as more people find out about this place. I noticed the forums are now closed to unregistered members, and certain boards are open only to a few. I am certain that this will make it more difficult to attract new members unrelated to existing regulars. Perhaps this is a good thing, perhaps a bad thing; who am I to say? I've never subscribed to elitism myself, but maybe it's not--or doesn't have to be. I don't suppose those who post information on their school here could return the favor and link this forum from their school's website too?
Well, that's my obligated unsolicited .02.
/me returns to lurking.

| Some forumites consider lurking to be akin to listening in on someone else's conversation. Thus such things as passwords private forums, and chat. But then again, why not participate? |

Perhaps. But if the conversation was not meant for all ears, those members cannot fault others for listening. Such things should be left for PM. If indeed lurkers are looked down upon, those with nothing to share and have no desire to engage in small talk would be unwelcome, leaving only places for those who have some unique knowledge with which to educate the others in the community. That is truly elitism.
The answer to your question, however, is time. It is difficult enough to find time to read through the topics in which I find interest. It takes far longer for me to reply. Just this reply alone cost me twenty minutes as I edit my responses a number of times before I am satisfied with its contents. Imagine how much time I might spend on a decent discussion. Hours. That I have not to spare.
I could put forth one reply to every interesting thread of discussion and ignore any responses. That much I have time for. But that would be impolite. So I nip it in the bud by not posting at all.

Welcome to my world - I have to read everything !
Anyway the reason for the closed forum and we're not the only one who has that is it is for business owners. In order that they may converse with other owners without having to worry about answering to their students and/or employees when tossing around ideas.
As for the registration prior to entering - that was the default setting and I didn't change it because those who wish to participate will register. Even the old forum allowed you to look but you could not post unless you were registered as a member.
The forum has been going for less than 6 weeks vs SFO's 6 years so give us some time!! Compared to many others I've seen that have been around a while - we're doing just fine.
Glad to have you here and look forward to your participation when you have the time!
Thanks
